It was mixed bag for Utahns on this season of the mixed martial arts reality show "The Ultimate Fighter."

During Wednesday's season debut of the Ultimate Fighting Championships TV series, 28 fighters battled in preliminary fights to continue on for the remainder of the show. They train in Las Vegas and vie for a shot at the live finale to earn a contract with the organization, the sport's largest.

Orem's Court McGee, 25, won a back-and-forth battle against Seth Baczynski that saw the first two rounds end in a draw.

Both were obviously tired in the sudden-victory third round, but McGee outwrestled Baczynski to earn a spot on the show.

Clearfield's Jordan Smith began his fight with Brad Tavares with a bang, as both came out strong, looking to finish the fight quickly.

Smith landed several hard shots, but Tavares pushed the undefeated seventh-grade teacher against the cage and landed a devastating right knee and right hand combination that put the 25-year-old Smith down to the canvas, forcing the referee to stop the battle. The loss does not count on Smith's official record.

Also earning a spot on the show was former Salt Lake City resident Kyacey Uscola, whose vicious right hook dropped Brent Cooper to the mat and brought a swift end to his preliminary fight.
